Cowboys Edge Buccaneers in Tight NFC South Battle with 26-24 ‘SNF’ Victory: Key Highlights

The Dallas Cowboys fended off a late comeback attempt by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, securing a 26-24 win on Sunday night at AT&T Stadium. DaRon Bland’s game-sealing strip and recovery in the final moments cemented the victory for Dallas.

The win marked Dallas’ fourth in their last five games and snapped Tampa Bay’s four-game win streak, further intensifying the NFC South race. The Buccane
ers, now tied with the Falcons at 8-7, sit second in the division due to Atlanta’s season sweep. The Cowboys, despite improving to 7-8, were officially eliminated from playoff contention earlier on Sunday.

Cowboys’ Fast Start Holds Off Buccaneers
Heading into Week 16, Tampa Bay was favored and leading the NFC South. However, the Cowboys’ hot offense quickly set the tone, opening with a 10-0 lead and maintaining it throughout. A fourth-quarter touchdown from Ryan Miller brought the Buccaneers within two points, but Bland’s crucial takeaway on Tampa’s final drive dashed their hopes.

CeeDee Lamb delivered another stellar performance with seven receptions for 105 yards. Brandon Aubrey added four field goals, while Jalen Tolbert and Ezekiel Elliott each scored touchdowns. Backup quarterback Cooper Rush spread the ball effectively, keeping the Dallas offense humming.

Defensive Heroics Steal the Show
Dallas’ defense made pivotal plays, recording four sacks and two game-changing turnovers. Jourdan Lewis’ highlight-reel interception thwarted a key fourth-quarter Tampa Bay drive, and Bland’s late-game strip sealed the win. Tampa, down by just two points, had a chance to get into field-goal range before Bland’s decisive play stopped them cold.

Cooper Rush Steps Up
With the Cowboys’ ground game struggling, Rush rose to the occasion, completing 26 of 35 passes for 292 yards and one touchdown without any turnovers. He connected with eight different receivers, including Lamb, who posted 105 yards. Rush’s efficiency, including a season-high 8.3 yards per attempt, powered Dallas past Tampa Bay’s struggling pass defense.

Cowboys Show Resilience Despite Elimination
Though officially out of postseason contention, the Cowboys played like a team with everything on the line. Lamb fought through a shoulder injury to put up big numbers, Rush delivered one of his best performances, and the defense came through in critical moments. If Dallas had played this way earlier in the season, their playoff outlook might have been different.

Mayfield and Buccaneers Fall Short
Baker Mayfield completed 31 of 43 passes for 303 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, but his performance fell short of expectations. With a playoff spot on the line, the Buccaneers needed Mayfield to outshine Dallas backup Rush. Despite opportunities, Mayfield couldn’t deliver the impact needed, and the team’s inconsistency proved costly.

Buccaneers Lose Crucial Ground in NFC South
Tampa Bay’s loss to a struggling Cowboys team dealing with injuries and playoff elimination was a major missed opportunity. Now tied with Atlanta for the division lead, the Buccaneers no longer control their playoff destiny.

Tampa Bay has a favorable remaining schedule with home games against Carolina and New Orleans, but they’ll need Atlanta to falter. The Falcons face Washington next week before finishing against Carolina, and Tampa must hope for at least one slip-up.

This pivotal loss leaves the Buccaneers in a precarious position as they fight to stay alive in the NFC South playoff race.
